Legal AID Clinic

Legal Aid Meaning

Legal Aid refers to the assistance provided in the conduct of legal proceedings before courts or other authorities, including advice on legal matters. It is required at various stages for obtaining guidance or resolving disputes in courts, tribunals, or other legal forums. Legal aid ensures that individuals are not denied justice due to factors such as poverty, illiteracy, or other disadvantages. It offers free legal support to the economically weaker sections of society, enabling them to exercise their legal rights.

Mandate of Legal Service Authorities Act and Constitution of India

Legal Aid in India is regulated by the Legal Services Authorities Act of 1987, along with related regulations and state-specific laws. Article 39-A of the Directive Principles of State Policy (1976) guarantees justice through equal opportunity by providing free legal assistance. Additionally, Articles 14 and 21 of the Indian Constitution ensure the Right to Equality before the law and the Right to Protection of Life and Personal Liberty.
